🏛️What Trump’s Victory Means for Nuclear

With Donald Trump’s return to the White House, nuclear energy is likely to receive strong backing, with a focus on both large-scale standardized reactors and smaller modular reactors for civilian and military uses.

Trump has expressed admiration for France’s standardized approach to nuclear power and has voiced concerns about the complexity and inefficiencies of larger reactors in the West. His support for small modular reactors aligns with bipartisan and military interests, positioning nuclear energy as a cornerstone of his energy policy.

Congress, Vice President Vance, and Trump's advisors also favor nuclear energy, suggesting that pro-nuclear leaders will be prominent in his administration. With broad bipartisan support and strong local community acceptance, nuclear power is expected to shoulder much of the clean energy agenda under Trump, as it’s one of the few areas where both parties align.

In contrast, Trump has a negative stance on wind and solar energy, particularly offshore wind, which he has criticized as expensive and less valuable than nuclear. Additionally, he may alter or reduce Inflation Reduction Act support for non-nuclear clean energy, especially as these projects have primarily benefited red states.

This is CNBC’s take on a what nuclear energy could look like under Trump:

🐝Meta's Nuclear Plans Halted by Rare Bee

Meta’s ambitious plan to power an AI data center with nuclear energy was derailed due to the discovery of rare bees on the proposed site.

The facility was designed to support Meta’s AI initiatives with a reliable, emissions-free energy source, addressing the intense power demands of artificial intelligence.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg informed employees that the project’s cancellation has left the company exploring alternative locations and energy sources to sustain its growing AI infrastructure needs, which currently surpass available data center capacity.

Meta’s investment in AI infrastructure is substantial, with $9.2 billion allocated in the recent quarter for servers, data centers, and networking.

Nuclear energy remains a promising, sustainable solution for Meta’s AI ambitions, though the setback highlights the challenges of balancing environmental concerns with the push for advanced technology.

Germany's Government Collapse Sparks Nuclear Revival Hopes

Germany’s government recently collapsed amid internal disputes, particularly over budget and energy policies, renewing discussions about the future of nuclear energy in the country.

Despite the phase-out of nuclear power in April 2023, public support for nuclear energy has grown, with 67% favoring its continued use to reduce energy costs and support industrial production.

Eight reactors remain in good condition and can be reactivated within nine months, pending amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and necessary staffing and fuel provisions.

The conservative opposition CDU/CSU parties are exploring options to reactivate these reactors, viewing the nuclear exit as an economically damaging, ideologically driven decision.

A new election is anticipated in early 2025.

🥳The Green Party of Ontario Has Ended its Opposition to Nuclear Power With the New Policy [LINK]:

“Be it resolved that the Green Party of Ontario would support the continued use of nuclear power alongside other forms of low carbon emission energy production, in the case when it is the most environmentally and fiscally responsible option, and with respect for the sovereignty of Indigenous Nations.“

👋EU Energy Nominee Shifts on Nuclear

During his EU confirmation hearing, energy commissioner candidate Dan Jorgensen, who previously opposed labeling nuclear as "green," acknowledged nuclear’s essential role in the EU’s clean energy strategy.

While Denmark, his home country, remains anti-nuclear, Jorgensen is increasingly open to nuclear’s potential, recognizing its importance for EU decarbonization goals and its presence in the energy mix of 12 EU nations.

Jorgensen committed to creating a detailed report on nuclear investments in the EU and expressed cautious support for advancing SMRs, aiming for operational SMRs by the early 2030s.

Additionally, he stressed nuclear safety and the need to reduce reliance on Russian nuclear fuel, aligning with the EU’s goal to phase out Russian energy by 2027.
